Candles have been here for a long time. A candle is (usually) a tall cylinder of wax with a small “string” at the top. Once the string is lighted, a small fire will appear, making a glow. The wax will melt as the fire burns. On birthdays, we like to put candles on a birthday cake, light them, and blow them out, making a wish. The number of candles is your age. In the picture above, you can see melting wax slowing moving down the solid candle. So candles, in simple terms, are wax lights. The first candle made was a candle in China made from whales’ fat. It was invented during the Qin Dynasty.

Here is how a candle works:

As time passes, the wax will melt away.
