Out of My Mind

Out of My Mind is about an 11-year old girl, Melody Brooks, who is extremely smart but has disabilities. For example, she can’t walk or talk. She can only jab her thumb. Ms. Billups was a bad teacher as she kept on teaching the ABC’s. Melody’s mom Diane fired up to argue with her. One day the pet fish, Oliver, jumped out of the bowl and died. He was replaced by Butterscotch, a nice, understanding fuzzy dog. Soon Melody got a new sister, Penny Marie Brooks. Penny loves to dress up and is a skilled escape artist. She likes to ride in the car. Melody got into the Whiz Kids’ team, a group of smart kids who will compete. In the first round, the school Splauding Street Elementary won. Melody had a sip of Coke. They went out to dinner. Melody ordered some mac and cheese. The bullies, Claire and Molly, notice and are surprised. Claire throws up. On the last day, Melody’s uncaring teammates leave her behind. Without Melody, they had a huge impact. The team lost. Melody convinced her mom to drive her to school. Mom drives over Penny’s leg. Penny is severely injured. Melody arrives at school and yells at them angrily with her machine that can talk, the Medi Talker. Penny gradually heals from the wound.
